Our Mission
With the changing climate in social and political attitudes toward the LGBT community, there is increased visibility. However, there is one group within that community that is greatly under represented. The dominant woman of colour is just that group. Hard Candy was created to remedy this condition.
The mission of Hard Candy Calendar is to create a highly visible medium for the community both regionally and locally; decrease external homophobia by generating maximum media coverage to the reality of these women; and diminish internal homophobia by presenting individual role models.
About The Wall Calendar
About
The Hard Candy Calendar is a 12 month wall calendar produced by Journey Creative Design Studio. It features butch womyn but are often accompanied by feminine counterparts. First published for the 2009 calendar year, it is credited with giving stud womyn a showcase equal to the kind more feminine womyn receive in other publications. Many young tomboys have been inspired and encouraged to view themselves as attractive and sexy and worthy of visibility as any other woman.
The Cause
The calendars cause is Breast Cancer Awareness. All profits from the sale of the calendar go to individuals and groups touched by the disease who are in need of assistance. The cause was chosen in recognition of model/actress, Danielle Jones surviving breast cancer. Danielle is featured in the month of December in the Hard Candy Calendar. Many of the models involved in the project have been touched in some way by the disease. This is our way of giving back to our community while supporting a worthy cause.
The Participants
With the goal of representing a very real demographic, Hard Candy Calendar womyn come in all ages, shapes, sizes and colours. The womyn in the Hard Candy Calendar are not typically professional models. They are real womyn who volunteer to be featured in the pages of the calendar.
Our volunteer model drive is currently closed. We typically search for model volunteers in the Spring. If you are interested in being in the calendar, please keep in touch and try in spring 2012.
The Cover
Unlike traditional wall calendars, Hard Candy Calendar does not feature a cover model. The signature black background with a single icon in the middle is seen as symbolism of the mysteriousness of the womyn pictured within.
The Themes
The Hard Candy Calendar was created by artist, Jennifer Griffin to give exposure to womyn of the LGBT community who are largely ignored. Wearing many hats, Griffin is also the photographer and graphic designer for the calendar. The name Hard Candy was conceived to represent the sweetness of being a woman the the hardness of being butch, Griffin unveiled the first issue in 2009 with the subtitle: Pop Suite. Alluding to the theme of placing the models in roles of characters in pop culture.
In the 2010 Hard Candy Calendar: AfroZodiac, photoshoots had a theme based on the astrological signs. In its third year of production, Hard Candy Calendar 2011: FurtureStud, Griffin took her imagination to new heights exploring a the world in the future in which “butch” evolves into something wholly different.
